2020 National Umpire School
February 21- 23, 2020- Stevens Point, WI

National School being held at Stevens Point during the dates of February 21-23 (Friday – Sunday).  You will be able to find the information on the National School on the USA Softball of Wisconsin website (usasoftballofwi.com)

It is a great opportunity to sharpen up your umpiring skills as a veteran umpire and develop good habits and skills as a newer umpire.  Share this information with anyone else you know that would be interested.  If you have any questions about hotel accommodations or the clinic, please contact Matt Disher.  His phone number is 715-498-8000.

If you plan on being eligible to be assigned to a USA National Tournament, you must have attended a National School within the last five years.  Wisconsin has not had one since the last one held in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  This was six years ago.

Finally, the last date to turn in your information to attend the National School is January 24th.  Please send in your information as soon as possible.

********************* HAVE A PLAN FOR CONFLICT*****************
Conflict is inevitable, but you can have a plan for it and know how to address it.

You aren’t responsible for the outcome of the game, but you ARE responsible for the process.

Umpires should LISTEN to the coaches.

Treat people with dignity. Shut thing down EARLY. Call coaches to you- don’t go into the “lion’s den” (dugout).

Talk about Sportsmanship at the Ground Rules meeting. Use “WE”, not “I”. Don’t “worry” about whether you are respected or not.

Generate Voluntarily-

COMPLIANCE
COOPERATION
COLLABORATION PSYCHO MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT

“SHOWTIME MINDSET” You won’t be taken seriously if: Your pants are wrinkled
Your shirt is faded or dirty
Dirty black shoes
Umpire hat is worn and old

KEEP THE PROXEMICS 10-5-2

10 feet- Evaluate the situation/exit if needed
5 feet- Conversation distance
2 feet- Operating Distance

Keep your back to the stands to start a conversation. Talk calmly and look them in the eye. Listen to what they have to say.

1- Clarify (Acknowledge you heard them)
2- Paraphrase (Redirect them back to the professional goal you have in mind)
3- Reflect
4- Summarize (Persuasion- Explain why and confirm understanding. Offer options- let them choose. Give them an opportunity to reconsider. De-brief with your partner after the game. “Are you ok?” “You looked like you were taking a beating back there?” *****************************************

We have a TON of softball tournaments this summer, so if you are interested in umpiring, we will have a lot of games for you. We will NOT assign you 9 games in a day, so if you’re looking to just earn money, this isn’t the organization for you. Doing that many games in a day, doesn’t do anyone any favors because you can’t be sharp after that many games. If you need to order uniforms, please do so now, so you are prepared for the season.

There have been some complaints about Honigs quality has gone done, so you can check Gerry Davis for uniforms. We are working with Gerry Davis to receive 10% off of our orders for SEWSA. For MMFL and MGFL- you will now be receiving direct deposits from the leagues instead of checks. It is the wish of the association to be paid on a weekly basis. Please make sure you fill out your “REPORT” on Arbiter after the game, advising of the score, and whether both umpires showed up or not, so they know how to pay the umpires. DO NOT wait two months to have payments corrected if you are paid incorrectly. ASA is now listed as USA Softball.   Their website is now http://www.usasoftballofwi.com/

”LIKE” SEWSA on Facebook-    https://www.facebook.com/SoutheastWISoftballAssociation/?fref=tsThe WIAA video and test is due NO LATER than March 19, 2020.www.wiaawi.org

Board nominations will close on March 18, 2020.   If you are interested in the President (Chris), Treasurer (Scott) and Sargeant at Arms (Tim). Please advise James or Mike if you’d like to be considered for either position..
